What is a U Card? Your U Card is your official UMN student ID and identifies you as a UMN student. It’s required if you’re taking at least one in-person class.
What does it do? Your U Card unlocks class buildings, serves as your bus pass (if purchased), and can be used to pick up your PSEO textbooks. Carry it with you at all times.
Your U Card will grant you access to:
PSEO Textbooks & Course Materials from University Bookstores (not required, other forms of ID are accepted by the Bookstore Scholarship Desk)
University Building Access (during hours of operation)
Universal Transit Pass (purchase required)
Dining Dollars (purchase required)
University of Minnesota Rec Centers (if you purchased a membership or have a class there)
There are two options to get your U Card depending on how you would like your photo to appear. Choose one of the following photo options:
Upload Your Photo (highly recommended): Already have the perfect picture? You can upload it online. Once you receive an approval email, you can visit the U Card Office to receive your card.
Take a Photo in Office: If you do not have a photo you want to upload, you can visit the U Card Office and have your photo taken and card printed in the same trip. Plan extra time for your visit if you choose this option and be sure to bring the required forms of ID (see below).
During the summer following your admission to the PSEO program, you will need to pick up your first U Card. To receive your card, you must present valid identification to the U Card Office. Bring one of the following identification options:
Option 1: Primary ID (highly recommended). A standard government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport) from the U Card Office's approved Primary ID list.
Option 2: High School Photo ID
Option 3: Secondary IDs. Two alternative forms of identification from the U Card Office's approved Secondary ID list.
When to pick-up? New students can pick up their U Card as early as June 1, but there’s no rush - so long as you get it at least one day before your first in-person class.
Where to pick-up? The U Card Office is located in G22 Coffman Memorial Union (see contact information and hours for the Twin Cities East Bank location).
Not coming to campus? The U Card Office will hold your U Card for 5 years; you can pick up your U Card if you ever need to access services on campus.
If you already have a card but need a new one, you can visit the Replacement U Card webpage for information on lost U Cards or replacement cards (including for legal name changes). A $30 replacement fee applies if your card was printed within the last five years.
If you attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for your undergraduate education after PSEO, you will use the same U Card.
You are eligible for a free replacement U Card every 5 years.
