The work of graduate faculty in preparing the next generation of scholars and professionals doesn't stop with classroom teaching. The graduate school provides resources to maximize relationships with advisees, deal constructively with conflicts that may arise, and address ways to communicate more effectively to minimize misunderstandings.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) releases a guide each year to be used as a reference tool when working with international students (F-1 and J-1 visas).
https://isss.umn.edu/departments/advisors/guides-and-training
The guide provides information and resources to help in assisting international students through the following topics:
Removing Holds
ISSS Requirements
English Course information
Work Authorization Information
Mental Health Resources
Who to contact in ISSS
**This guide contains language specific for advisors, so they ask that it not be shared with students as it contains more information than they need!
The Council of International Graduate Students (CIGS), in collaboration with the Graduate School and ISSS, has developed a new online guide offering resources and suggested actions for faculty and staff to better support international graduate students who face unique challenges related to their visa status, limited funding options, and adjusting to a new language and culture. Many also have intersecting marginalized identities within the US that can affect their mental and physical well-being. Action from faculty and staff to support international students can greatly impact their success, productivity, sense of belonging, and future careers. It can also drive longstanding cultural shifts and create more caring communities.
