Vacation & Leaves
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)
The Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA, is a federal law that allows you up to 12 weeks of job protected leave per fiscal year. With the proper medical documentation and supervisor approval, FMLA can be used for:
Your own serious health condition
The serious health condition of an immediate family member
Caring for a newborn or newly-placed adopted child or foster child
The urgent need of an immediate family member who is on active duty in the military services
Employees will have three options to submit their leave request:
Self-service using the My Time tab in MyU
Emailing the Leave Administration team at leaveadmin@umn.edu
Calling the Leave Administration team at 612-624-8647
An OHR leave specialist will then contact the employee to walk them through the process and support them until their return to work. The specialist will also coordinate with the employee’s supervisor and unit HR staff throughout the leave.
When necessary, supervisors, family members, or HR staff can submit a leave request on behalf of an employee by contacting the Leave Administration team.
For information on FMLA and other leaves available to employees, review the OHR website.
Vacation
The amount of vacation time you earn can be affected by several factors, including your employee group, your length of service at the University, and the number of hours you work a year. You can view how much vacation leave you have and how much you are earning/accruing through MyU. To request vacation, first initiate the request with your supervisor. After approval, report time in MyU.
