RULES

Classroom rules are essential for any classroom whether it be a nursery or key stage 5 setting. Good rules that are understood and followed can be helpful in preventing problems happening before they occur.

However through co-production we know that if young people are involved in creating the rules, they will have more ownership and involvement in those rules.

Rules should be simple and easy to remember. They should be displayed in the classroom where everyone can see them and understand them. This may mean rules being symbolised for the young people who struggle with literacy or vocabulary. They need to be specific e.g. what does 'be respectful' mean? It may be different for different students.

The more visual they are, the more they are understood and remembered! Young people need to also know why they are important. They need to be frequently referred to and an understanding of the consequences is also needed and displayed in a way that young people can understand (again more visual).
