About the BCTC Project

This toolkit was developed by Jo McNulty at The Speech Bubble with the support of a lot of very dedicated and talented people in Blackpool & funding from the National Lottery.

About this project

Whilst working with Wendy Casson and her team at Educational Diversity, Jo was asked to develop a physical binder that could contain some general advice for staff. The focus would be on helping staff recognise how they could improve both their knowledge and adapt their classrooms to help pupils with speech, language and communication needs.

As the ideas for various strategies came together, they quickly realised that this project had enormous scope to help both Educational Diversity and other schools and colleges.

With funding from Blackpool Council and Headstart, Jo created an inital digital document and worked with staff and pupils at several locations to identify those areas that they felt her specialist experience could help.

Enthusiasm from several different but connected Blackpool teams meant that Jo was able to conduct detailed surveys and consultations to curate a toolkit that would be general enough to help every pupil and interesting and implementable enough to win the sponsorship of staff too.

The product of all of that hard work, combined with the vision and missions of many people has resulted in the development of the Blackpool Classrooms That Communicate Toolkit.

Special Mentions

Widgit

Many of our therapeutic resources are made with the excellent Widgit symbols.

Widgit are our favourite experts in creating easy to recognise symbols and intuitive software for the rapid creation of some very powerful aids for our pupils.

We can not recommend them enough. So much so, that The Speech Bubble is a Widgit Centre and proud to pass on a small discount on some of Widgit's solutions directly to our clients. (This is not a pitch! Just a hearty endorsement!).

Elklan writes and delivers accredited courses for education and other staff working with those with speech, language and communication needs and for parents, and trains a network of licenced tutors to deliver Elklan courses locally.
