Asking for help can be challenging whether you’re an adult or a child. But why is it so imprtant? Everyone needs help at some point and we need to encourage our young people to do this and create a culture that promotes asking for help.
Some young people might not want to ask beacuse they are embarrassed, they might not know when the right time is, or they may think they will get told off. We need to empower young people and give them confidence to ask for help. But how do we do this?
Firstly, they need to know that there is a problem, then they need to know if they require help for it. They then need to know who to get help from and how and when to do it. How can we do this?
You may need ot teach it explicitly
use role play and modellng to show them
use probloem solvng flow charts (see visual support)
use sabotage to provide opportunities for them to practise (use diffiuclt words, make tasks impossible, make mistakes etc)
Use visual reminders
encourage young people to jot down on post it notes (in case they forget what they need help with etc.)
use cue cards for those young people who are not yet ready to verbalise their request (see below)
