Every classroom in the country is decorated with works of art and helpful words but studies are starting to show that heavily decorated classrooms may be detrimental to learning. But how much is too much? Equally, bare, soulless classroom also can impact negatively on learning.
Effective Dislpays:
should display student work - this demonstrates to them that the teacher cares enough aout their work to show it off
should include inspiring role models - this can give students a greater sense of belonging, especially if diversity is included and representative of the students
should avoid clutter - 20 to 50 % of the walls should be left CLEAR. There should be space between displays. SWAP don't ADD! The displays should be lively but not chaotic.
should use visual aids to reinforce learning - ensure they are relevant, categorised, easy to see from where the young people are sitting and are not blocked by other displays (e.g. hanging form the ceiling)
should have balanced wall colours - consider one feature coloured wall
should not cover windows - natural light is crucial
should avoid making scores/points visible - this may serve to encourage the successful young people but may have a negative impact on those young people who are struggling
are considered in thinking about where you stand to deliver your lessons - having wall displays behind you can be distracting and impact on listening
