This subject will introduce students to the subsystems of English (grammar), the history of English and features of language use in modern Australian culture. The subject will introduce big ideas about language, migration, colonisation and politics that will challenge and stimulate students' thinking about how language is used in society and culture.

Power and Politics: Students will study the nature of political language and how it is used to persuade others, reflect values and create change in society, with a focus on the subsystems of English.
Global Englishes: Students will study the variety of Englishes that exist around the world, including Australian English, and be introduced to the role of colonisation and institutions in expanding the use of English worldwide.
