In the beginner level of Year 9/10 Media Studies, students will focus on two key areas: Photography and Filmmaking. Through a hands-on approach, they will learn basic media theories, basic camera techniques and editing skills. In the realm of Filmmaking, students will collaborate on group projects, honing their abilities in cinematography, audio production, and editing as they create short films or advertisements.
Additionally, students will explore the diverse roles within a film team, gaining insight into professions such as scriptwriting, directing, and cinematography. This multifaceted approach not only equips students with technical expertise but also fosters an understanding of the collaborative nature of media production.
Technical Media Skills: Students will develop proficiency in basic camera techniques, including framing, lighting, and capturing footage, as well as editing skills using software tools to produce polished media content.
Creative Problem-Solving: Through filmmaking and photography projects, students will learn how to solve creative challenges, such as visual storytelling, framing shots, and editing footage to convey a clear message or emotion.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Working on group projects, students will gain experience in collaborating with peers, taking on various roles within a media production team (e.g., scriptwriting, directing, cinematography), and contributing to a collective goal.
Understanding Media Theory: Students will acquire foundational knowledge of media theories, including narrative structures, visual language, and audience engagement, helping them to critically analyze and create media products.
Film Production Process: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the three key stages of filmmaking—pre-production, production, and post-production. They will learn how to plan and organize a project (pre-production), manage the filming process (production), and refine their work through editing and final touches (post-production).
Photography: Students will focus on mastering camera techniques, editing, printing, and exhibiting their work to develop their photography skills.
Filmmaking: Students will collaborate on creating a short film, enhancing their skills in cinematography, audio production, and editing while exploring various roles in a film team, such as scriptwriter, director, and cinematographer.
This subject serves as a foundation for students interested in pursuing VCE Media in Year 11 and 12. In VCE Media, students will deepen their understanding of media production, analysis, and theory, building on the skills learned in the beginner-level course. They will further develop their filmmaking, photography, and editing abilities, while exploring more complex media concepts like media codes, conventions, and audience theory. The hands-on experience gained in the beginner course prepares students for more advanced projects in VCE, including producing short films, advertisements, and media analyses, and can open pathways to further study in university programs like Media Studies, Journalism, Film Production, Digital Marketing, and Communications. Career opportunities in the creative and media industries, such as content creation, editing, and production, will also be available to those who pursue VCE Media.
