The Media Level 2 elective is a semester-long course covering selected descriptors from the Level 9-10 Victorian Curriculum. To prepare for later years, students will also be introduced to Code and Conventions and the Stages of Production as it is applicable to the VCE Media Study Design. Additionally, students will develop skills in utilising various technical equipment such as using DSLR cameras, utilising studio lighting, applying post-production editing and sound engineering.
Technical Skills – Proficiency in using DSLR cameras, studio lighting, post-production editing, and sound engineering.
Creative and Analytical Thinking – Developing creativity in media production and analytical skills applicable to subjects like English, Literature, VCD, and A&E.
Collaboration – Working effectively with peers in production teams to create media content.
Project Management – Enhancing self-discipline, organization, and time management through open-ended production tasks.
Media Literacy – Understanding codes, conventions, and the stages of production, preparing for VCE Media and related studies.
In the Film Analysis unit, students will explore their favorite films and the significance of studying media before identifying genre conventions and learning about technical and symbolic codes, applying this knowledge through the analysis of two films to examine how genre conventions are constructed and differ, culminating in a group scene analysis presentation, followed by revision and a test, with assessments including multiple-choice, short, and extended response questions, all of which build foundational knowledge essential for VCE Media, particularly in Media Representation (AoS1) and Australian Stories (AoS3).
In this Individual Product Creation unit, students will be introduced to the five stages of production before developing a detailed pre-production design plan that includes inspiration, research, equipment and technologies, narrative and audience statements, storyboards, scripts, and a project timeline, followed by the production and post-production of their individual media product—whether a film, animation, music video, print piece, podcast, or photography series—culminating in assessments on pre-production planning documentation and the final product, with the entire process mirroring key VCE Media outcomes, including Media Forms in Production (U1O2), Narratives in Production (U2O2), Research and Development (U3O2), Pre-production Planning (U3O3), and Media Production (U4O1) to build essential industry-relevant skills.
This subject provides a strong foundation for VCE Media, developing essential skills and knowledge that align with key study areas such as Media Representation (U1AOS1), Media Forms in Production (U1AOS2), Narratives in Production (U2AOS2), and Media Production (U4AOS1). By engaging in film analysis and individual product creation, students gain firsthand experience with the codes and conventions, stages of production, and analytical frameworks required for VCE assessments, including School-Assessed Tasks (SATs) and written exams. The skills acquired—such as critical analysis, storytelling, technical proficiency, and independent project management—are directly applicable to VCE coursework and provide a solid preparation for Units 3 & 4 Media, where students undertake major creative projects and in-depth media analysis. Additionally, this subject supports learning in VCE English, Literature, Visual Communication Design (VCD), and Art: Creative Practice, reinforcing transferable analytical and creative skills.
