Scratchboard

Artist Statement:

The assignment was to find a picture that you had taken yourself and make it black and white. When you had a photo you transfer the image onto the scratchboard and start scratching in a pattern that would make the shade of white or black. The subject of this project was a picture of my cat Lady yawning. The materials that I used for this assignment were a scratchboard and the scratching tools.

Some elements of art I used are Texture, Value and Form. Some principles of design I used are Movement and Contrast. I think my project evolved by the methods I used to scratch.

I don't believe that there is any meaning behind this project. The thing that I am most proudest of in this project is the way the ears came out. I struggled on some parts of the background trying to find the best pattern for it. I also struggled on the chin line where it is white. I over came these struggles by rethinking the way I was doing it an trying another approach. If I could revise any part of my art I would maybe make the arm a bit smaller and with more texture.
