Formative Block
Summative Block
1/2 Black & White
2/4 Extended Print
3/4 Alternate Background
4/4 Artist Choice
Formative Artist Statement:
For the formative the assignment was to carve a opposite pattern that expresses negative space. The subject of my formative assignment was a sun (positive) and the moon (negative). The materials that I used were a part of a block and carving tools.
An element of art I used were Space. Some principles of art I used were Pattern and Unity. I think my project evolved by me adding two stars next to the moon for more balance.
For me there is no meaning behind it. I am most proud of getting an even amount of white over black and black over white. I struggled Carving out the moon at first, I was worried that I was going to cut out part of the black. I think I wouldn't change anything in this project.
Summative Artist Statement:
The assignment was to carve out a picture on a block that represents you and then print it on a four pieces of paper to make a Black & White, a Alternate Background, a Extended Background, and a Artist Choice. The materials that I used are ink, carving tools and a block.
Some elements of art I used are Value and Space. A principle of design I used was Contrast. I think my project evolved by me learning how much ink was enough ink and what was to much.
There is many meanings behind each of these prints 2/4 reminds me of the time I watched the sunrise at summer camp, 3/4 is a map of Wisconsin where I was born, and 4/4 is a recipe of a cookie that my family makes every year at Christmas. The thing I am most proud of in this piece is my actual carving. After my first couple prints I didn't need to go back and re-carve anything. I think I struggled on my alternate background because the recipe paper didn't stick to the paper it stuck to the block. I over came this struggle by peeling off the recipe paper and glueing back on. I don't think that I would change anything if I could.
