Tonal Square

4.25x4.25"

Puzzle Piece

Within this art piece, I was given a square to recreate and increase its size. Then once completed, all squares would come together to form a larger piece. This project was difficult for me at first because I had never experimented with different types of pencils and shading techniques.

I used all types of pencils from hard to soft to create light strokes and darker strokes when they were needed to create different tones and shades. I also used a tortillon to blend certain aspects and create a smoother look to the shading.

At first I began starting with light colors first using harder pencils to shade. As I began finishing, I darkened some spots up to create more of a contrast by using softer pencils to shade. I then blended some spots with tortillon. I experimented with how certain pencils looked when using them to create different tones and found that the soft pencils, when used lightly can create a nice deep tone and I used that to darken up some spots. My next steps could be to darken the background more because I found that when I put my square into the collage of everybody else's, my background was a little too light so I would create more of a deeper tones background.
