Coil Technique

Squiggle Coil

Coil & Carve

Before fired...

For my Coil & Carve project I first brain stormed what I wanted its shape to be. It had to be tall, so I made many long coils and wrapped them around until I had my desired height. Then I began smoothing its body with various tools, making sure not to pull a coil off of the one below it. Once it was smooth I began thinking of what design I wanted it to have on it's surface.

I wanted to make a simple and minamalist pot. So, I began making thin deep cuts and peeling out the excess clay. I like the way it turned out because the various swirls on its surface look cool. I decided to glaze it with a grey glaze because again, I wanted a minimalist effect. Its top is a bit uneven, but I think it makes it look funky in a cool way along with the swirls on its sides.

If I were to do anything differently, I might've made the cuts less deep, because after I glazed it I realized that there were some gaps where the glaze had not reached. Also, I think that coloring the cuts a different color than the base color would create a cool depth effect. Currently, I am waiting for it to come out of firing, and I am excited to see how it looks–I also glazed the inside with clear shiny glaze which should make it look nice.
