Print Plate (Final Plate)

15"x9.5"

I created this plate after realizing that I needed thicker cardboard and deeper shapes cut into the cardboard instead of lines so that I could ensure that the print would show up when I were to go and actually make the print itself.

When creating my final print, I brainstormed what I wanted my design to be and decided on something I see everyday–waves. I based my plate off of what my scenery is, and then added other various shapes inspired by a tribal print. I began to create my plate, but then realized that the cardboard was not thick enough and the cuts would not show up on my final print–so, I started over. This second time, I used thicker cardboard and cut out shapes instead of lines to create a more distinct print.

For my materials, I used acrylic paints to paint the triangles into shark fins coming out of the water. I also used this paint to create the shark coming out of the waves. I was trying to find a sponge in my house to create the ocean foam effect, but I ended up using a piece of broccoli! It actually worked very well in place of the sponge! I then used glitter which I found in my art cabinet to add another aspect to the piece. I really like how vibrant it looks.

There were many prints that I ended up making– I made many different colored prints and created ghost prints. I noticed how you can create so many prints from one plate, especially when adding more and customizing the print to something different. I really like how my shark turned out as I was trying to stick to the beach theme as my printing plate had ocean waves on it. I like what the glitter added as well and think that my final print shows aspects of my original plate, but also has an added twist to it that is cool when looking at the original print.
