Mandala Tile

6''x4.5''

(after breakage)

For my tile, I started by creating a sketch. Then I figured out the black and white spaces–the negative spaces, that I would either be filling with glaze or scratching clay away from. My tile ended up breaking, but then I got help, and cut the sizes down. almost shaving the sizes down.

The sketch was a really important part of this tile because it wasn't only the design I chose, but also it helped me map where I was cutting away clay, and where I was leaving it and would then go on and glaze it. It was a bit hard for me to wrap my head around because I rarely ever do work with negative and positive space.

I then drilled a hole at the top of it so I could hang it on something such as the wall. I then started to scratch out little details around my bigger designs. As the designs I was creating got more details, the negative and positive space got more complex and you could really tell the difference between the two because it enhanced the design so much more versus if it was all a negative space design, or all positive.
