Skiing Down Hill
10.25"x8.25"
The story behind the wintery scene of my "Beautiful Oops" is the idea of skiing on a tall hill surrounded by other hills. Recently, my friends have been wanting me to go skiing with then because I have never gone before! I have been so excited to go with them and am just waiting for the first flakes of snow to fall before I can rent some skiis, and hop on the slopes for the first time. I saw the drop of ink of the paper as a person at first then quickly saw the skiing poles in the imagination. Then I started to sketch the scene out and realized it did look like a man skiing!
When creating this piece, I originally started off by sketching the man's figure with a pencil just to see if it resembled what I saw it resembling at first glance. When it did, I began to create darker lines and then finally use colored pencil to color in the snowy mountains, trees, chairlift, and even a little cabin in the background. I even found little splotches of ink to turn into snow fakes falling from the sky!
At first, when sketching lines, I tried to picture the man's shape. He was what I saw as the main figure in the drawing and I wanted an emphasis on him. During the beginning of the process, I wasn't sure how to draw snow due to it's light color...white! I then began to make fine lines to create contrast from the white background, but also keep the snowy look. I used blue and other cool toned colored pencils to create the snowy effect while keeping the shape of the mountains. Next steps that I could do would be to possibly experiment with depth especially because the mountains are in the background, and experimenting with shading especially because it was difficult for me to match the color and shades of the snow on the mountain without making the snow an un-natural color.
