Snout

The inspiration for this piece was my dog sox! I found the picture in my camera role and realized that it had a very nice contrast of values. The whites and blacks were concentrated but there were also grays and in between tones. I also chose this because I love my dog and I thought the way he flipped his snout up into the air was very cute!
This work was made with charcoal–black, and white. I also used a shammy to get the light grey tone in the upper left corner. The white charcoal pencils ran out, so I sharpened a white stick to make my own and it worked well. It worked better than I thought it would and it allowed me to create the small, white details that I couldn't make with the blunt white stick. I also added black ink to the dark spots on his nose and the picture frame on the far left.
The processes of this art piece were, for example, using the black charcoal stick to make the deepest tone of black I could. There were spots on Sox's fur that were the darkest tones in the picture so I needed to make sure that they were as concentrated as possible. When I started, I was a little worried that the snout would't show up because it was black on black in some areas, but using the charcoal, I was very happy about how it turned out.
