Duality

Glazes used: C-21

This assignment was to create something that incorporates duality by demonstrating two opposite or opposing ideas such as good and evil or light and dark. The duality that I used for this project was man-made and natural. My project was a flower vase that has three different sections and the outside is made to look like three buildings. The buildings are man-made and the structure of the vase meant for flowers is natural. To build this vase I used slabs to construct it.

First I made four slabs by using a ruler to make sure they were the same dimensions, then I connected all the sides. When making my second building I wanted it to be a bit shorter to really emphasize all the different buildings. Then I did the same for the third building. Once all three buildings were made, I slipped and scored them together. While construction I had to reshape or shorten the tops of the slabs a few times to make sure they were all the same size. I also had to revise where the buildings connected by smoothing them out more.

I chose to make a building flower pot because it is getting warmer and I am excited for spring. Because I was in a more spring mindset I wanted to make something that I could put flowers in. Something I would change is I would make window texture to add a little something to the buildings, I was going to do this but by the time I was at that step, the clay was too dry. Another thing I would do differently would be to make the middle building, the biggest one, I would make it slightly smaller so it fits in with the other two a bit better. Overall I am happy with the way it turned out.
