Multiple Pinch Pot Project

Glaze used: C-21 + C-10 (mixed together)

This project was the summative for pinch pots, the assignment was to make something, decorative or otherwise, that included 5 (or more) pinch pots total. So I decided to make a sculpture, my inspiration was really just faces and different physical characteristics that stand out. I wanted to give each face some personality that you can pick up on just by looking at them. The materials I used to make my sculpture were clay, tools like scrapers, slip-to-attach things like eyes, and two glazes C-21 and C-10 mixed together to get the almost white but with a blue tint that I wanted.

How I created my work was first I made two pinch pots then slipped and scored them to attach them together making a hollow sphere, then repeated this process two more times to make all three heads. Using 2 pinch pots for each head I ended up having a total of 6 pinch pots in total. After constructing the heads I started playing around with the shape of each one because as I said earlier I wanted each head to look as if they each had their own personality, and I started thinking about what type of eyes and nose shape would fit with the shape of each head. After I was done with all three heads and attached the noses and or eyes, I then cut a hole on each one where they would connect. So for the first head, I cut a hole on the bottom then a hole on the top and bottom of the middle head, and the top of the last, making sure to match the holes up so there was no trapped air for when they were to go into the kiln. After this, I then slipped and scored each to attach them all together. One problem I ran into while working was deciding on what the eyes should look like and how to make all three heads look like they went together.

The story behind this artwork was really trying to make each face have a personality and visually flow together like they were meant to be in a group yet still individually unique. Overall I am most proud of the little details I added that really make the piece look good, like turning the middle head to the side while the other two are looking straight. Also how all three have at least one aspect of the facial future cut out, the first two it's the eyes and the top is the mouth. One struggle I had was picking a color of glaze that fit what I was thinking of, but I overcame this by combining glazes to get a color I was happy with.
