Coil and Carve

This assignment was to introduce us to a new method of ceramics, coiling. We had to use the coil method to make a cup of our choice and then carve out a design. I decided to make a mug and carve random organic patterns, shapes, and a few plates. My whole idea for this work was to keep it organic and try to make all the elements flow. For this project, I uses clay, purple underglaze, and carving tools.

Once I built up my pot and made then attached my handle, I waited until it was leather-hard to start under glazing. Once I finished underglaze and letting it dry I started thinking about what forms would flow with the color of my mug. Finlay, I chose to carve organic texture then sent it off to get bisque fired. In the beginning, I was having a hard time making the coils and getting them to the right size. In the end, I think they may still be a bit too thick making my mug as a whole bigger than I originally wanted but overall I was happy with my result.

Going into ceramics at the beginning of the year one thing I was excited to make was function pieces, especially mugs. I wanted to make something in class that I could use when it was finished. So going into this project I wanted to make my mug personal, which is why I chose a color that I like and make the texture that went along with it. I am proudest of the stability of my work, though I did have time to work with the thickness of the coils at first I overcame this in my final project.
