Finch, Sam Dylan. Gender in Film. 10 Aug. 2016.

In all of the media we consume, there are large differences in gender roles and how classes are presented. These differences are not always noticeable however and the audience may not always catch on to some of the stereotypes used. For example, most media sees women as the “secondary sex” and inferior to men. Most media constructions would be made by men and their desires and interests would always be fulfilled. Women were often portrayed as seeking to “play out” these interests for men and this became very objectifying. In the film and book “Of Mice and Men”, one of the main characters, Curley, had a wife who was depicted as always dressing fancy and having perfect hair while living on a farm. This piece of media depicts his wife as always looking presentable and ready to please the men living on the farm. Several times throughout both the movie and the book, Curley’s wife was shown acting provocatively and standing in such a way that accentuated her hips and waist. This creates a very shallow view of women and creates the view that they want to act submissive for the male gaze. Curley’s wife's name was never revealed which shows her lack of identity and the possession her husband had over her. In my film however, I will make sure to include fair views of femininity and masculinity that aren't sexualizing. Unlike many action movies involving men, women will be the main characters in my movie and will take the roles men usually have filled.
