The five elements of mise en scene include makeup/costume, set design & props, facial expressions & body language, lighting & color, and positioning of characters or objects in the frame. In my photo, my friends and I are all at a reggae festival and there are a lot of examples of mise en scene. My friend Juliana and I are both wearing brightly colored clothing which signifies happiness and energy. Because of our clothes, it can be indicated that we are extroverted and younger people. The boys in the background are wearing white shirts which can show purity and simplicity. We are also sitting on a colorful striped towel that matches our clothes and jewelry; this shows we are coordinated and fashionable. The light is shining on Juliana from the left side of the screen which adds to the light hearted nature of the photo and creates an uplifting atmosphere. In this picture, there is high key lighting which means it is natural and realistic to our eyes. I am looking at Juliana while smiling in this photo which shows that we have a good relationship together. The colors of the photo are very soft and almost dreamlike and this adds to the mood of the picture. If the sun were not shining and there were clouds out, there may be a different connotation to it. By using mise en scene, the media may become more relatable to the audience and easier for them to make connections to their own life. For example, younger people may relate to this photo because of our clothing and group of friends. The aesthetics and creativity in a production can either intrigue or discourage an audience to continue watching. This is why visual effects and mise en scene are crucial to pieces of media.Â
