For film sound, I took a photo of me sitting on my bed and added my favorite song to the background. I chose the song “Welcome to the Machine” by Pink Floyd because it goes with the mood of my dark and colorful lights. Welcome to the Machine has many synthesizers in the background which remind me of lasers and that also ties into my room. The music in the background of this video is non-diegetic sound which means it is not directly from any part of the media. This layer of sound adds more character to the video and reveals more of the mood that may not be apparent without the music. In other situations, non diegetic sound can create suspense, emotional impact, and can be used as a transition between scenes. The aspect of sound plays a huge role in film and can change the mood very quickly. In my film, I will use both non diegetic, and diegetic sounds to establish the plot and create different impacts for the viewers. Aside from music in media, other sound can be obtained by using voiceovers, ambient sounds, sound mixing/sound motif, and voiceovers. An important use for non diegetic sound, like the sound in my video clip, is cluing the audience in on major themes. Without using the characters, music can let the viewers in on the next scene or hint at scenes to come.
