Audience is one of the most important factors in filmmaking and the production of media. The primary audience, much like the name, is the audience who receives the communication directly. Since this audience is most involved/influenced by the media, it is very important to cater the media to what they want to see. The secondary audience however makes up the group of people who lie outside the primary niche. This is the audience that may still buy your media and support you in some way. This could include friends, family, coworkers, or acquaintances. The tertiary audience is often called the “hidden audience” and includes those that don't fit in either the primary or secondary audience, but still share common interests with them. Since my group partners and I created a google quiz that would reveal what genre our viewers most wanted to see, we are creating the film that would most interest our primary audience. This is very important because you want the most interaction possible with the media you are creating. Diversity in ethnic groups and class is also very important in media so the audience can make connections with their own life. An accurate portrayal of society affects both the over and under represented groups in society. In my film, I will make sure to include diversity in both class and gender to make it as relatable to the audience as I can. While representation is not always about diversity, it can also create differences between people and show their roles in society. For example, if someone in my film was behind the counter in a bank wearing a name tag and professional clothes, we would assume they work there since their outfit is representative of a worker.
