Well done to the children and parents in these classes!
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week has been a week for innovation and growth. I'm delighted to share that I had a productive meeting with Senior Pupil Leadership Team. We have decided thatnour focus will be on ensuring break and lunchtimes re enjoyable for all and as the majority of our children behave well all day everyday, we want to improve behaviours rewards and incentives. It is clear that this SPLT will be as successful as the ones before and they understand that they represent their peers as well as St. Joseph's. Our young leaders showed great enthusiasm and maturity, and I'm excited to see the positive contributions they will make to our school community throughout the year.
We had a wonderful treat for our pupils today! Thanks to the fantastic efforts of Mrs Winters, we have an animator visiting the school. This exciting opportunity allowed our children to explore the creative world of animation and develop their understanding of this engaging art form. Thank you, Mrs Winters, for arranging this inspiring experience for our pupils.
This term, we are proud to be hosting several trainee teachers and teaching assistants at St Joseph's. Our commitment to developing others reflects our values as a Catholic school community - nurturing talent, sharing expertise, and investing in the future of education. Our trainees are making excellent progress, and our pupils are benefiting from the additional support and fresh perspectives they bring to our classrooms.
This week, I had the privilege of attending the Croydon Catholic Headteachers Conference. It was an excellent opportunity to collaborate with fellow Catholic school leaders, share best practices, and discuss the priorities and challenges facing our schools. These connections strengthen our ability to provide the very best Catholic education for our children, and I returned with fresh ideas and renewed energy for our school community.
Pupil Consultation Meetings will take place next week. This is a valuable opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress and development with their class teacher. Please ensure you stick to your assigned time slot, as this helps us keep the evening running smoothly for all families. If you haven't yet booked your appointment or need to make alternative arrangements, please contact the school office as soon as possible so we can ensure you are updated about your child's hard work and learning.
We're looking forward to welcoming Fr Tomasz to school on Monday, when he will be visiting the children. Priest visits are always special occasions that strengthen the spiritual life of our school and provide our pupils with opportunities to deepen their faith and understanding.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
We hope you and your family have a restful weekend,
Mrs Ashley and the Team

We have been learning about our planet. We have been observing our planet using our senses, exploring our spaceship role-play area and reading story books about life in space to help us understand that there are other planets. We learnt about gravity, these are our gravity paintings, we made them by letting go of pom poms from a height to see them drop onto the paper.
This week in Year 1, we had lots of fun exploring our senses! We started by looking at optical illusion pictures and discovered how our eyes can sometimes trick our brains into seeing things in different ways.
We then carried out a smell experiment, using only our noses to sniff a selection of mystery items, including coffee, garlic, onion, milk, ginger, and sardines. It was tricky to guess what the items were using smell alone, but there were lots of giggles and some very thoughtful guesses.
A fun and memorable way to learn how our senses help us understand the world around us!
Year 4 have continued to work hard this week as we completed our science fiction stories based on 'The Iron Man' and began our next maths topic about Multiplication and Division. We began learning about States of Matter in science and will be using the water cycle as the inspiration for our English Poetry unit which we will begin next week.
We have also been talking a lot about our upcoming trip to PGL, which still has some places available if you haven't signed up for it already. I will e holding a meeting for parents before half term to finalise details
This week in Year 5 the children got given their parts for their Macbeth production. Next week they will be watchin a performance from the Guildford Shakespeare Company, before taking part in a workshop. On Friday they had a special treat from animator Alex Pilalis, who has worked on DogMan, Doc McStuffins. They created superhero characters of themselves and learnt what it takes to be an animator.
Our girls’ netball club is up and running on Fridays and the girls are absolutely loving taking part each week. The sessions have been full of energy and enjoyment, with smiles all round.
We had a lovely Epiphany liturgy to start our term and are now looking forwards and making plans for the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday is on the 18th February this year, which is during the half term holidays, and we will begin a variety of activities when the children return to school. We will send out further information nearer the time but this will include mass on 19th March (which is St Joseph's Day) and the annual Y3 Easter production. During this period we hope to raise money to support CAFOD and the Catholic Children's Society.
