Well done to the children and parents in these classes!
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back! The St Joseph's team were so happy to return from half term to see the smiling faces of our wonderful children, who looked smart and proud in their school uniforms. The first week back has had a smooth start and we have all enjoyed being back together again.
We have been utilising our outdoor learning spaces across the Federation this week, with numerous year groups visiting the forest school and getting hands-on with their learning. Year 3 particularly enjoyed making teepees as part of their experience day, linked to English and Mr Teles utilised his gifts to demonstrate how to make them sturdy.
As a part of Catholic Social Teaching we must use our talents to support others. This week EYFS tecahers from St. Mary's Infants visited to see our leadership and Early Years provision and team. It was great explaining the steps we had taken to enusre of Nursery and Recption classes were innovative and developed all children. They were highly impressed by our offering for the children and said they were motivated and inspired. Thank you to Mrs Swain, Miss Hayter and Mrs Rizzi for sharing your expertise with them.
We've also had two trainee teachers join us this term. We are excited to support their growth and development.
We have been preparing for Lent, for many the most impoRtant part of the liturgical year. Mrs Philips has organised a range of exciting activities spanning this significant period and we have to get all pur parish Preists involved in helping us to prepare. On Wednesday, Years 2 to 6 will be attending Ash Wednesday Mass at St Matthews. You are welcome to attend this service and worship with us.
Next week is also Book Week! Children can look forward to a visit from West End Schools, along with a range of fun, reading-based activities. World Book Day is on Thursday 6th March, and children have been invited to come to school wearing their pyjamas or something cosy. They can also bring in their favourite book to share with their classmates.
One of the special aspects of primary schools is how children learn to interact with and form healthy and positives relationships with others. These vital skills are developed within and beyond the classroom and are part of the hidden curriculum of a school. As children are learning, they may not always get it right, however we model and help children to resolve issues in a respectful way in lines with our core values of kindness, love and respect. If you have any concerns about your child, or their development please let us know. We care about all of the children deeply and feel blessed to be trusted to play such an instrumental role in their lives.
This week, many of us shed tears as we gave Mrs Mulhern hugs when she come into see us. She has been of a member of staff that has supported the St Joseph's community for the last 27 years! She has worked tirelessly to uplift and guide the children passing through the Federation for such a long time and I know that mine and so many other people's life are richer for having her in it. Unfortunately, Ms Mulhern has been unwell for some time and has made the decision to retire. Her her absence will be felt deeply. We will miss, her laugh, wit and stories about times gone bye. We are currently planning an exciting goodbye assembly that will be scheduled for later on this term. Parents are welcome to attend to say farewell to a St Joseph's legend who has captured our hearts. We hope that Mrs Mulhern enjoys some well earnt rest and relaxation time with her family and loved ones and keeps getting stronger and stronger.
We sent out a Pupil Consultation letter today, giving a month's notice to assist you in your planning. Thank you to all those who completed our parent survey! As a result of this we have added an additional day to increase the number of early time slots available to you all as per the demand.
We hope you have an amazing weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.
Mrs Ashley and the Team
Welcome back after, we hope you had a restful half term.
Please see the attached flyer, with details on how to access free parent Webinar workshops which are designed to give helpful tips on how to support a range of needs.

Both reception classes went to West Norwood library this week. The librarians told us a lovely story which we listened to really well and we sang and learnt some new songs. We then chose a book to take home to share with our grown ups.
Can carers and parents please return their child's library book on Wednesdays with homework. We will swap the book the they have returned for a new one and will do this every Friday.
Year 1 have been very excited to learn about their new topic 'Comparing Animals' this week. So far, they have sorted animals into groups based on their similarities and differences. They will be going on to identify characteristics specific to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Once they have recalled the diets of carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, they'll be reviewing data and creating block graphs. Wow, Year 1 are really challenging themselves and enjoying their learning, we're so proud!
Year 4 have had a fantastically busy start to this new half term. In class we have been working hard to create performance poems all about the water Cycle, which we have also been learning about in science. We started a new maths topic all about fractions and will continue this for the next few weeks.
On Wednesday we had a cake sale in the hall, a huge thank you to all the Y4 parents who have supported us by making and donating cakes to sell and thank you to anyone who bought the cake - we hope you enjoyed them as you helped us to raise over £130, which will help towards paying for our end of year trip to the Tower Bridge Experience.
On Thursday we had a trip to West Norwood Library, where the children talked about books with the librarians, before choosing some to bring back to school to read. Thursday also saw us enjoying the winter sunshine in the Forest School where we did some bark rubbing and creating art using natural materials.
Our fabulous week ended with Year 4 at the swimming pool, enjoying the lessons as well as the walk in the sunshine. Thank you to the parents who regularly accompany us, your help is most appreciated.
We are all really proud of how Year 6 have started their busiest half term! They have all been focussed and on task and dedicated to their learning. They've grasped ratio and proportion in Maths, and started their new topics of Circuits in Science and Energy in Geography.
This week we had a chance to take part in a cricket coaching session. All the children enjoyed themselves and had fun while learning the basic rules of cricket. They cannot wait until next week!
Boosters are still happening next week, so please ensure the children are in school for an 8.30am start.
Exploring Our World: Geography Learning This Term
Last term, Geography at St. Joseph’s has been an exciting adventure!
Key Stage 1
Year 1 explored their local surroundings in the What is it like here? unit. They became mini geographers, learning how to read maps, identify key features of the school grounds, and even designed improvements for their playground based on their own research! Year 2 took their learning global with the Do you prefer to live in a hot or cold place? unit. They located continents, the Equator, and the Poles, discovering how different climates shape the way people live. They even compared the UK with Kenya, thinking about whether they’d rather live somewhere warm or chilly!
Key Stage 2
Year 3 explored the power of nature in their unit Why do people live near volcanoes?, learning about Earth's layers, how mountains form, and the impact of volcanic eruptions. Year 4 dived into Where does our food come from?, discovering how food travels across the globe, the environmental impact of food choices, and the importance of responsible trade. Year 5 journeyed to the mountains in What is life like in the Alps?, comparing the human and physical geography of the region with our own local area. Meanwhile, Year 6 tackled a pressing global issue in Why does population change?, examining migration, climate change, and how population shifts affect communities.
It was a fantastic term full of discovery, and we can’t wait to see where their geographical curiosity takes them next!
