Well done to the children and parents in these classes!
Dear Parents/Carers,
The month of October is dedicated to the Rosary and our Mother Mary. We look to Mary and use her as an example of how to love and serve God. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. The children will be learning about and saying the Rosary in class. We ask Mary to support and strengthen us all, this month and always.
In order to ensure our children remain safe all children participated in a workshop that informed them about the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to remain safe. Our children became aware about ways to detect this potentially harmful gas and the workshop lead complimented our children's engagement and behaviour. Thank you to Mrs Mapp organised this event, we all learnt something new.
On Tuesday our Y5 boys participated in a football tournament at Dulwich College! A huge well done and thank you to the boys selected- you represented our Federation brilliantly and you performed well despite the rainy conditions.
The Year 4 children received specialist coaching from Norwood Futsal Club on Friday. The children were keen to enhance their football performance and the whole Junior school enjoyed the assembly the coaches delivered; clips of sporting genius from famous football players wowed and inspired the children. I wonder which of our children will become the next Mary Earps or Jude Bellingham.
The children are always surprised to know that that I like football and understand the rules! Being from Manchester, a city passionate about football with the strong rivalry between Man U and Man City, football played a massive part in my childhood and I used to play. I enjoy joining in with the children and showing them a skill or two.
The parent governor election concluded on Wednesday. Thanks to all those who voted, we had a greater turnout than the previous time. We will be sharing the result of the successful candidates next week. Thanks again to all three nominees.
We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Nursery went for an autumn walk in the Forest School this week. We were looking for signs of autumn, we found lots of leaves and looked carefully at their colour, size and shape. We brought lots back to our class where we did some sorting and matching.
This week in Year 2 has been both productive and enjoyable! We have been learning about coordinating conjunctions and expanded noun phrases, enhancing our writing skills. Additionally, we explored missing numbers on number lines, reinforcing our understanding of number concepts.
We also delved into the topic of schools in the 1900s, making comparisons between education beyond living memory and schools today. The children expressed their happiness that school allows them to talk and work together in groups, noting that it seems much more fun now!
Our class text, Diary of a Killer Cat, has been a highlight, sparking creativity and engagement among the students. Furthermore, we attended a carbon monoxide workshop, where the children learned about safety in an interactive setting.
It’s been a fantastic week of learning, and we look forward to building on these skills next week!
Y4 have had an incredibly active week. We have participated in the Daily Mile, cross country (despite the rain), Hockey and a taster session of Futsal.
In English we are planning and drafting our own adventure stories based on our book 'The Whale', we are very excited to get writing and are looking forward to reading them to each other. In Maths we have just finished our first Unit all about Place Value and will be moving on to Addition and Subtraction next week. Please don't forget to keep practicing your times tables.
In science we have been learning about our teeth and their functions. Did you know that an adult has 32 teeth (including wisdom teeth), ask your child how many they have at the moment:-) especially as October 4th is World Smile Day!
This week Year 5 have continued with the theme of space in understanding how to write a diary. Taking clips from the film 'The Martian' as inspiration, the children have researched Mars and are now learning to write from the point of view of an astronaut stranded and alone on an inhospitable planet. The children are enjoying using powerful vocabulary to empathise whilst describing the thoughts and feelings of the character.
We have also been very impressed by the fantastic models and posters of the the solar system that Year 5 have brought in over the last 3 weeks as part of their homework. They have really made a fantastic effort and the standard of presentation is outstanding. The children's work is proudly displayed in school for all to enjoy.
We have also had a a workshop delivered by Bonanza Creative which taught the children in a creative way about carbon monoxide and how to stay safe. The children enjoyed the interactive sessions and explored the subject through drama.
Seven Year 5 boys participated in a football tournament at Dulwich College, competing against 31 other teams. This was their first tournament together, and they performed exceptionally well. They finished with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses, just missing out on the Shield Final. The boys represented the school impeccably, both on and off the pitch.
A special shout-out to the five boys who walked back to school in the rain, showing great spirit. A standout mention goes to Karter, who stepped up to play in goal and did an outstanding job, including a crucial penalty save. A big thank you to Coach Nyron for his guidance and support throughout the tournament.
Maths
We have had a wonderful start to the term, with all children across both schools extending their knowledge of place value. Children have been learning about the value of the digits within numbers, some as great as ten million! To extend our learning further, we have also been honing our number skills by comparing numbers, rounding numbers and ordering numbers.
To develop their thinking, children work through a range of tasks daily. These include fluency tasks- which support speed and efficiency of calculations, reasoning tasks- which allow the children to explain their mathematical thinking and develop their mathematical vocabulary, and problem solving tasks- which allow children to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts by applying their knowledge to different investigations.
We frequently use manipulatives in Maths, which allow the children to broaden their understanding and move from concrete, to pictorial to abstract ways of thinking and independent application of their skills.
