Well done to the children and parents in these classes!
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week has been a busy one, as we've had Assessment and DT week across the Federation. The children have been working hard to apply their learning and show us how much they grown as students.
The children did very well and are now accustomed to doing some of their assessments online. This is something we developed last year and a way that the Federation uses AI advancements to elevate teacher workload. We will use the data acquired to continue to personalise the teaching of your child and to inform us about what we need to do next to ensure all our children are successful in their learning. Well done to the children and the team!
It was also Design Technology Week this week! The children all produced projects for a purpose. It was great to see the 4 stands of DT covered across the schools- food tech, construction, mechanics, and textiles. Thanks to Miss Hayter, our DT Lead for all her support of the team. You can read the curriculum focus below to see what the children created and learned and their views on their lessons.
I met with the whole Senior Pupil Leadership this week. This was a fantastic meeting and my heart was full from their intellect and drive to make a positive difference, not just in our schools, but the community. The week before I have set them the task of researching charities that will would help this year and they have selected, CAFORD, Shelter and Save the Children. They also said they would like to fundraise to enable all children to attend trips and events. They will be strategically leading on the development of a prayer garden , enhancing break times and fundraising events. They will be supporting the operational leadership of improved attendance and punctuality across the Federation. I feel extremely blessed to have such a forward thinking SPT, they are already making a positive difference!
Four children from Y6 represented St. Joseph's at the Annual Croydon Umbrella Trust Science Quiz on Wednesday. Aaron (6P), Aylene (6H), Jonathan (6H) and Sienna (6P) did extremely well and enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Ms Perry and Miss Nakanyike for taking them and cheering them on.
We hope you and your loved ones have a wondeful weekend,
Mrs Ashley and the Team
As we approach the run up to Christmas, we often feel like we are being stretched with endless lists of things we need to complete and presents that need to be bought. All of this can be overwhelming, not only from a financial point of view but also from a social emotional perspective. It is very easy to forget about ourselves and focus on the needs of our children and families. However, in order to be there and help others, we do need to take care of ourselves too.
Activities that we can do to help us can include:
mindfulness https://www.annafreud.org/resources/children-and-young-peoples-wellbeing/self-care/mindfulness/
photography https://www.annafreud.org/resources/children-and-young-peoples-wellbeing/self-care/photography/
listening to music https://www.annafreud.org/resources/children-and-young-peoples-wellbeing/self-care/listening-to-music/
drawing or painting https://www.annafreud.org/resources/children-and-young-peoples-wellbeing/self-care/drawing-or-painting/
aromatherapy and fragrence https://www.annafreud.org/resources/children-and-young-peoples-wellbeing/self-care/aromatherapy-and-fragrance/
These are few of many suggested ideas on the Anna Freud Institution which is a a world-leading mental health charity for children and families.

Reception have started cricket lessons and are being introduced to a variety of new cricket skills that focus on building coordination, teamwork, and basic techniques. They will learn how to hold a bat properly, practice hitting soft balls, and develop their hand-eye coordination through fun, simple drills. The emphasis is on encouraging movement and balance, helping children learn how to bowl underarm and understand the importance of running between the wickets. Through games and group activities, they also begin to grasp the concept of teamwork, learning how to work together to field the ball and communicate with their teammates. The environment is playful and supportive, allowing young children to enjoy the sport while developing essential motor skills and social interaction.
It has been a very eventful week in KS1 this week. We started with assessments in year 2 to show how much we have learned so far in the year, the teachers are very proud of what we have achieved and we know what are going to focus our learning on in the coming months before we progress to year 3.
As well as this, we have been enjoying our DT topic of building structures in the afternoons each day this week. We started by looking at different 3D shapes to see which of them was the most stable using plasticine to make different shapes and see how well they would stick to a raised surface. This was a lot of fun and we recorded our findings in a table, showing a very scientific process in our learning. Next, we had to investigate which of the structures was the strongest and as a class we tested how many books a cuboid, triangular prism and cylinder would hold. We were surprised to discover that it was the cylinder which was the strongest, so we experimented making cylinder of different widths and heights.
Finally we had to use all the knowledge that we had gained in order to design and make a chair using paper and tape. Together, we created design criteria and drew out our different designs for what the chair would look like before making our cylinders and building the chair by taping the different pieces altogether. It was a lot of hard work and we found it tricky to work out how to make them stand up. But we showed a lot of perseverance, tried our best and most importantly had a lot of fun.
This week has been assessment week across the Federation, and Year 3 have tackled it with great enthusiasm and determination. They’ve shown impressive focus and dedication during their exams, putting in their best effort each morning.
However, it hasn’t been all about tests! In the afternoons, we’ve been diving into our cooking and nutrition topic in DT, learning about the benefits of eating seasonally. The children have explored where our food comes from and why choosing seasonal produce is so important.
On Wednesday, Year 3 enjoyed a fun-filled trip to the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton, where we watched Kung Fu Panda 4. The children had a fantastic time, and the excitement was so great that they even gave a round of applause at the end of the movie!
It’s been a week full of hard work and fun, and we’re so proud of how Year 3 have embraced everything with such positive.
Year 5 children have had a great start to Autumn 2 and consistently bring in research and art project homework, that helps to supplement their learning in a a creative way. Their keenness to learn the new topics in the curriculum and be curious about the world around them, from learning about life cycles, the Ten Commandments and features of mountains to expanding and consolidating their understanding of fractions in maths, is wonderful.
The Year 5 team are very proud of our children's achievements and after speaking with so many parents this week, we can tell that they share in our pride.
During this week's assessment week, all children at St Joseph's have been enjoying their Design Technology lessons in the afternoon.
This term KS1 have been learning about structures. Year 1 have been busy constructing windmills whilst Year 2 have been designing and making a bear's chair. Reuben (Year 1) shared 'We started with a cup, we had to make a hole to fit in the straw to hold up the sail.' Cressie (Year 1) said 'I am very excited to make the sale and attach it all together. It has been so fun.'
JJ (Year 2) was very proud to share that he has been working with his friends Rebecca and Mia whilst making his bear's chair. Mia (Year 2) was keen to share that chairs need to be 'strong, sturdy, stable and comfortable.' It has been so lovely to see all the children's learning and skills developing over the week and we cannot wait for parents to see the finished products at the end of the week!
There has been a lot of learning, researching and planning recipes in KS2 this week. Year 3 have started sharing what they know about seasonal food. Maggie (Year 3) said she was excited to start peeling and cutting the vegetables for their seasonal Tart which they will plan and cook later this term.
In Year 5 Hallee and Aniah said that they were both really enjoying their DT lesson's this week. Hallee said 'We are learning how to plan and cook a spaghetti bolognaise.' Aniah said 'It has been interesting researching different recipes and seeing what goes into different spaghetti.' Both the children were very keen to return to class after talking, to start preparing the vegetables for their big class bolognaise cook tomorrow.
Year 6 have started the Christmas preparation's early this year by researching, designing and making a Christmas ornament. Bella (Year 6) shared she liked sewing at home with her Mum and it is nice to sew and create new things from old materials. Ayelen (Year 6) said she has been able to share her sewing skills with her friends and helping them get started with sewing. Below are a few photos of a very quiet Year 6 class all focusing on drawing, cutting and sewing their Christmas ornament. I am sure they will all be on display in family homes this Christmas.
