Geography

Aims:

• To broaden and develop pupils interest and understanding of Geographical topics.

• To introduce students to different areas of Geography not covered under syllabus.

• To  broaden, increase students awareness and knowledge of the Geography around them.

• Develop students skills of map reading, map drawing and questioning spatial    
  variations.

• To make a more informed choice about taking Geography as a subject for their senior cycle.

Objectives:

• To locate countries, counties, towns and rivers on a map with the aid of an atlas.

• To make a decision by analysing and interpreting the data compiled.

• Discuss Geographical topics and to question pre existing theories and thought.

Week 1:

(Two  classes) – Map Reading & Aerial Photos – Ireland: Scale, Grid References, Identifying Geographical features and Drawing Sketch Maps.  

Week 3 & 4:

 (Four classes) – Regional/Human/Social/Economic:

• Study a Region/Country – USA/India/South                        

• Africa/Australia/South America

• Map of the Region  

• Topics:  Poverty, Migration, Discrimation

• DVD – Stand & Deliver, Slum Dog Millionaire,                

• Invictus, Australia

Week 6:

(Two Classes) Raging Planet - Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Avalanches

Week 2:

(Two  classes) – Research - ICT

Week 5:

(Two Classes)  Project work – group work

Week 7:

 (Two Classes) Locational Geography & Quiz

Assessment:

Each student is required to have a Geography folder in which all handouts, maps etc are to be stored.  The teacher keeping in mind participation and classwork will assess students during class for the duration of the module.  Written evaluations and opinions on each topic will also be included.

Project based on (a) India  (b) USA  (c) South America  (d) Australia

This includes maps, geographical facts, historical facts, tourist information and images.
