In Transition Year, students do four work experience placements throughout the year. This consists of block weeks in November and February, and two sets of 7 Tuesdays throughout the year. Work experience is designed to prepare students for the working world. It boosts their confidence, encourages them to step out of their comfort zone and is helpful practice for when they are getting a real job for the first time.
The DSPCA holds a programme for Transition Year students. It is a block week from 9am until 4:30pm everyday. You will be with either dogs or cats for the whole week. The work can be difficult at times, but it is very rewarding. If you have an interest in animal care and rehabilitation or if you are considering being a vet, this is the placement for you. You must be comfortable around animals, as they can pull on their lead, scratch, or bite.
Applications usually open in May of 3rd year, and places are limited, so it is recommended that you sign up as soon as you can. You must also write a short paragraph about why you want to do the programme.
Several TY students participated in a week-long work experience programme with Mastercard. This programme consisted of various different talks about finance, technology, cybersecurity, AI and more. Students also learned firsthand about CV writing and interview skills. They worked on and presented a project where AI was used to help design a new app. The students involved enjoyed themselves and said that it was a valuable experience to see what working in the technology sector is really like.
Many students get a placement in a local shop or supermarket. This is a very valuable experience for them. It can improve their CV and help getting a part-time job in the summer. Working in retail also gives you an appreciation for the hard work that shop workers do every day.
Examples of duties include:
Stocking shelves
Organising displays
Using the cash register
Answering customer queries
Cleaning shop floor
If people are struggling to find work experience placements the school offers work experience within the school as exam attendants.
Students will help with the administration of the exams such as collecting the registration from the classes, helping collect the exams and doing jobs for the teachers.
The Garda Siochana holds a work experience in Pearse Street Garda Station. It runs from Monday to Friday, from 10am-4pm. You learn about many different things for example:
The role of a guard- What they do and what they hold
Drugs and their effects
What a detective does
The station and what happens inside
You also visit other places like The Criminal Courts of Justice where you learn about the courts and a guards role in the courts, Kevin's Street Garda Station where you learn about crime scenes and DNA, ASU ( armed support unit) , and the Military base in Gormanstown, Co.Meath.
Overall its a very good option for work experience if you have an interest in being a Garda or would like to learn more about it. It is very enjoyable and interesting!
