Composition is very important in moon photography, include a strong focal point i.e. a spindly tree, house, lighthouse to add drama to the scene.
Decisions - firstly you have make one of two decisions, firstly do I want to use a telephoto lens and capture the moon in all it's detail or secondly do I want to use the moon to enhance an already great scene in which case a wide angle lens will do the job.
Typical settings -
Harvest moon rising at Balbriggan lighthouse Co Dublin.
1. ISO 100, keep low to reduce noise in you
image.
2. Aperture f/8.0
3. Start your exposure time at 10 seconds,
increase to 2 minutes if necessary.
Moonrise on Portrane cliffwalk, Co Dublin.
4. Tripod and remote shutter release.
5. Manual mode and Bulb mode for exposures
over 30 seconds.
6. Typical settings two - Moonrise -
Tv - 1/125 , Av f/9.0 , iso 200-800 , auto WB
or Cloudy
7. Note : the moon moves very quickly when
rising so longer shutter speeds may
blur the moon's image, settings no
longer than 1/4 second should be
used.
8. It is best to shoot the moon the night before
or the night after the full moon as the full
moon can be too bright.
