Digital photographs are stored onto your memory card as
a digital file i.e. jpeg, raw.
Jpeg - This is a compressed image file taking up a small amount
of space on your memory card the attributes to this file i.e.
white balance cannot be changed later in photoshop.
Select this file type if you are on holidays or a sports
shoot and taking a lot of photographs.
RAW - This is the uncompressed file taking up a large amount of
space on your memory card about 11 MB, consider a raw
file as a digital negative, you can change the attributes to a
raw file like white balance and how much sharpness to
apply to the image and change the exposure level.
A raw file will require further editing converting to jpeg
before printing. Select this file type if it is important for you
to be able to change file attributes at a later date, like
landscape and wedding photography.
Raw + jpeg - Most DSLR cameras will have the option of saving
an image in both raw and jpeg simultaneously
giving you immediate access to your photograph for
printing or editing.
Tiff - If shooting using a 35mm or medium format camera and you
want to edit or upload your photograph then you will have to
scan that image into your computer, the file created by the
scanner is known as a .tiff file and like a .raw file is
considered as an uncompressed image and and will have to
be converted to a jpeg for printing.
