General

In 2022 there will be two race options: the usual round as described below and also an intro type route. The intro route goes to checkpoint 1 (the trig) and back the same way - 7.2 miles with 2000ft of ascent. The idea of offering this shorter route is to provide something less experienced or slower runners may prefer. It is easier to navigate being on the main path up and down and the running terrain is easier. I understand that this shorter route will count for the SW Series competition (a 'fiddle factor' will be applied to make the times for each count).

Maps will be supplied. On the ordinary route, the obvious route between checkpoints on the map are mostly on paths of some sort, from large walking highways to smaller running tracks along defined sheep-trods, however competitors are free to run off-piste' to follow their perceived optimum route.

The 'goat track' descent before reaching checkpoint 2 is along a defined path - it is relatively steep.

Checkpoint 2 on the spur/knoll is slightly off the path that traverses under the escarpment.

There is a good path around the escarpment between Check 2 and Check 3.

Start/Finish: The race starts just north of Tafarn Y Garreg on the A4067 near Dan Yr Ogof show caves. The route includes 3 checkpoints which must be visited in the correct order, namely:

CP1 - Fan Brycheiniog trig point (GR SN 826218) - this may end up being he stone shelter just before if weather on top is inclement.

CP2 – Knoll/Spur near bottom of 'goat track' (GR SN 816220):

CP3 - North end of Llyn Y Fan Fawr (GR SN 830221)

Each checkpoint will be manned/ marshalled.

Doing the run before the event day...or after it... in fact anytime.

If you want to try all this before the day of the race (or anytime after) you can by using the maprun app. On your phone after initiating the app and downloading the map as above at home:

This map is exactly the same as the race map, and all results appear in the same place.

Maprun info: You need to do two things before arriving on the day.

1/ Get the app on your phone.

2/ Get the map (route) for Fan Brycheiniog set up on your phone:

1/ Downloading the app from your fav place:

Android:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.fne.maprun6&gl=GB

iphone:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/maprun6/id1550049241

or search for Maprun6, by FNE Enterprises

Please make sure you have the most up to date version of the MapRun app installed on your phone.

You’ll need to set up the app with your personal details then download the map at home (don’t try at the venue as there is no mobile signal).

2/ To get the race map onto your phone, first start up the app then click:

Select Event - UK - Wales - South Wales Trails - Fan Brycheiniog PXAC

The map will take a few moments to download. You can view the map by clicking 'go to start'.

At the venue just go the app on your phone. When ready for the off in the car park press 'go to start'. Keep away from the start line until you are ready to start racing. Walk/run towards the start line when you're ready for the off. As you cross the start point on the track below the car park, your phone will bleep and you're on your way.All timing starts from the beep.
