HQ: The lovely modern and warm Llanfoist village hall. Ample toilets. Large hall with adjoining kitchen from where we can  serve chip butties, cakes and hot drinks.
If you are in anyway unsure whether this event is for you and wish to discuss what skills/experience is required please email the RO: pfsdodd@gmail.com
The new route introduced in 2021  goes to the trig - the path to the trig from the blockhouse was improved in 2021 - no bog and stones anymore - it's an easy gravel path.
There will be 2 compulsory checkpoints manned by marshals - see map.
We will use chip timing to make it easier for the finish team. At the finish I will scan your chip with a hand held scanning device. You will need to slow almost to a stop for me to do this.
There will be a hot drinks and a bite to eat back at the village hall as usual.
The route will be partially marked with yellow flags and white/red hazard tape. Black and white map supplied. It is essential that you visit each checkpoint and keep to the footpath and over the stiles below the open fell.

Route description:
From start head up the road, bear right onto track and through tunnel under canal. Keep straight on up the old cart track then eventually to fields (going over 2 stiles). Follow the marked path straight up through fields. When on the open fell above the intake wall, bear right and then follow the path directly up the north face. Once at the blockhouse, after the steep section, continue straight on up to the trig point (checkpoint and marshal 1).
Now run back the way you have come almost to the blockhouse but bear right down the track the follows the rim of the steep north face. Turn left at the marker and descend steeply straight down the hill on a mixture of shep-trods and mtb paths till you reach the intake wall (checkpoint and marshal 2). Turn left and run back to the stile you were at before into the fields. Descend directly the same way you came up to this point.

Are you a newbie to fell racing (or lack experience/confidence)? The colour chart below may help - generally the more that is  coloured to the left of the grid means easier (green and blue colours).
This fell race like most others is a completely different proposition in poor weather.  Not only do you need to be better prepared with clothing etc, but the terrain will be more challenging in wet and slippery conditions. The route is not marked some ability to navigate in the mist/fog is required when the cloud is low.
However, on a warm fine day the challenge of the route is minimal.
