Abstract
To most of us, overcrowded housing is regarded as one of major problems of the early industrialized Korean cities and as the present situation of developing countries, not as the current issue of Korean cities. Measures frequently used for overcrowded housing have supported this understanding since all these measures - the ratio of one-room households with three or more members, the ratio of substandard households in terms of number of rooms and housing sizes report values less than 5% or even 1%. However, these are calculated with critical errors in their assumption. Moreover, they are measured in the absence of strict definition of overcrowded households. Based on the international studies and cases, this paper reports that overcrowded households in Korea are more than 1.35 million – 7% of all households. This paper also includes abundant reviews about the negative effects of overcrowded households in today’s developed countries, which implies that it is urgent to employ improved measures about housing overcrowding in Korea.
