We visited Vermont, The Green Mountains State, twice. In June, we stayed a week in Newport, a small town with brick buildings and clapboard houses that boarders Quebec. The town surrounds Lake Memphremagog. It's a very large lake with 11 islands. We took an hour cruise on one if the non-raining days we had during our visit. Even though it was June, the weather was cool & crisp, which made for a beautiful sky & clear water. The Lake freezes during the winter, so ice fishing & winter sports are the norm here. We were reminded again, that they had a long winter, because Spring flowers were just starting to bloom.
We returned to Vermont again in August. Not quite as far North as Newport, but still in the mountain area of Bolton Valley. Our stay was planned at a ski resort, but it was too isolated, so we decided to move a little further into town. Stowe, Vermont turned out to be perfect. We stayed at an Inn that had a private lake. The owner was a model sailboat enthusiast, so we were able to spend an afternoon, sitting on the deck, watching he and his friends maneuvering their sailboats around the lake.
The weather was perfect (what a difference 2 months make), the green mountains went on forever. We spent some time at a Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream plant, a day finding and exploring covered bridges along fast flowing rivers, drove a narrow-winding road up a steep granite mountain, and a day in the tree covered mountains where we lunched at the Trapp Family Lodge.
Yes, Vermont is just as we had hoped-green & beautiful.
