We are destroying our planet, shooting each other every few minutes, hurling hurtful insults on myriad public platforms, abusing trust both public and private and even deflating footballs, with no end in sight. Yet, in the midst of this in Pennsylvania, there are the Amish, who still have a moral compass and the inner strength to stick to their principles. They avoid many of the "advances" of the modern age - computers, TV, fashion, autos, conspicuous consumption, believing them to be prideful and divisive.
Most are farmers who reside in Lancaster County, PA in big white houses on tidy cattle farms (yes, tidy!). Many of their customs are baffling to us - they travel the roads in black horse-driven carriages, work 6 days a week, spend their Sundays at worship, use metal rather than modern rubber tires on tractors and buggies and only go to school through the 8th grade. They have maintained a closed community for over 200 years but are still able to co-exist peacefully with their neighbors. We took a carriage ride conducted by an Amish farmer. He took us to his farm, talked about their customs and sold us home-made rootbeer and pretzels. Although their lives seem unnecessarily difficult, I found myself admiring them and even envying them a little for the strength of their convictions. I love the idea that there are such people.
