Pennsylvania ought to rename itself the "Emerald State." Green forests, green fields, green grass, green lakes, green yards everywhere! We recently spent 10 days in a cabin in the woods in one of the greenest spots I've ever seen - Dushore (pronounced dooshore), in northeastern PA. Spring has arrived and the new leaves have appeared. Look out a window, walk down the road, lounge on the porch and you are overwhelmed by a thousand different shades of GREEN! I couldn't help thinking how Californians would love it. There are huge lawn-like fields that seem to have just spontaneously appeared. I wonder if Pennsylvanians really appreciate them.
Creeks, rivers and lakes abound. Of course, there are many urban areas, but we chose to stay away from them. We saw Philadelphia on the horizon, and that's it. Dushore is a popular hunting and fishing center, and that is a whole new concept for me. Properly licensed and in many posted areas, you could hunt and fish almost year-round. Camouflage jackets are a common sight. Of the few people we met there, most were very pleasant (although there was one woman in the laundromat who could have been a character in "Deliverance."). This is not Southern hospitality, however. There was often a little "standoffish-ness" at first. All in all, like so many other places we have visited, I enjoyed my stay but would not want to live there longterm. Having said that, we loved the dentist there so much that we may make an exception and fly back to Dushore for our regular cleanings.
