While we were wine tasting yesterday, we drove through a town called Johnson City. We had no idea that this is LBJ country. So, yesterday we spent time in the small town; toured his boyhood home and walked a ways out of town to the area were his paternal grandfather settled. The State Park Service have done a great job with preserving the houses, cabins and land. Today we went out to the Johnson Ranch (240 acres-about 15 miles out of Johnson City) We were able to tour the working ranch in our car, stopping @ the small home (LBJ had it reconstructed and used as a guest house) where he was born, the original one-room school house he attended, the Johnson family cemetery (both he & Lady Bird are buried there) ending at the Ranch House (remember the Texas White House?) We were given a (ground floor only) tour of the house, which included his office. (Originals desks, phones, TVs and still smelled of cigarette smoke) He came to the Ranch 70 times while he was in office and signed bills, conducted Cabinet meetings and hosted dignitaries. His Air Force One (forgot how small they were in the 60's) jet plane was also on the property along with the convertible Lincoln Continental. It's a beautiful location and we're so please that we were able to visit/tour the area.
See Renee's wine notes concerning the other tours we took!
