Communication is what we train for. But so many times we are outside the loop or chain of command. Someone overlooked our email in the information that was sent out. Being a part of a large organization such as ARES, it is likely that you know what I'm getting at. I'm a member of the local ARES group and at times I seem to be outside the loop so too speak. What Is It?

Well I attended the last ARES meeting here locally and it was very briefly discussed. Something mentioned about maybe some digital communications or pass some win-link traffic maybe. So I know it takes us all and planning is essential for things to work somewhat like they should. So in the mean time while waiting for information concerning this event fast approaching, I ask myself what can I do to prepare for this with what little information I have available to me. As a radioactive Ham in my community I feel the need to do all I can do to train and prepare for any emergency communications event that might take place in first, my city, county, state, country.

So of course this is the age of the INTERNET and the computer so I got to googling. The first thing I found was the ARRL website that is linked to above for the (SET) 2014. So with this information I was a whole lot more informed as to what might be going on in my area. This brings me to where it would greatly benefit me as an individual Ham to find more resources that I personally am interested in. So when I run across something that is of interest to me then I assume there are other Amateurs that could benefit as well. Below are a few links that you might find helpful.

ARES Membership Requirements

Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Training may be required or desired to participate fully in ARES. Please inquire at the local level for specific information. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership

The Tennessee Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is a voluntary noncommercial communication organization that focuses principally on providing emergency communications to federal, state and local government agencies as well as non-government organizations. Amateur radio operators, also know as "hams", have been involved with public service emergency communications since 1913. "As time progressed, the need for and value of organization became evident, resulting in the establishment of organized trunk lines and net systems; later the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and the National Traffic System (NTS) were formed to complete the organization" (from the ARRL Public Service Communications Manual).

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is comprised of licensed radio amateur operators who volunteer to provide their equipment and expertise for communications duty in public service when disaster strikes. Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for membership in ARES. The only qualification other than the possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve.
