Public Meeting Monday March 18 on Permit Changes

This a reminder of the DEQ Public Hearing on the changes to Pall Corp's NPDES permit concerning the discharge of partially treated purgewater to Honey Creek.

The hearing will be held this coming Monday, March 18, 2002, 7:00 pm, Scio Township Hall, 827 North Zeeb Road.

Be sure to attend if you can. Make sure your neighbors know about the hearing.

The DEQ believes the increased discharge rate of 1300 gpm (1,872,000 gal/day) is needed because of newly discovered 1,4-dioxane contamination found in places it wasn't expected.

SRSW believes the proposed increase to 1300 gpm will pose unnecessary risks to our are water supplies.

SRSW believes that the lateral and vertical extent of the contamination should be fully defined (at the level of detect -- 1 ppb) and that any increase in the discharge rate should be at a proportionally lower ppb of dioxane to prevent harm to groundwater and Ann Arbor water supplies.

SRSW favors a "hybrid" solution where some of the fully treated purgewater will be carefully reinjected back to the edges of the plumes to help flush remaining dioxane back to purge wells.

SRSW wants the full carbon balance and full tracking of intermediate breakdown compounds promised in the earlier permits.
