Lesson 12: Ionic & Covalent Bonding
- Learning Goals:
- Students will be able to explain the difference between the formation of ionic bonds and the formation of covalent bonds. (B3.4)
- Students will build molecular models (B2.6)
- Students will write structural formulae for molecular and ionic compounds (B2.6)
- Hook: To get students interested and thinking about how atoms bond, you can show the following videos:
- Content: Lesson on Ionic & Molecular Bonding. This lesson will include the bonding continuum, electronegativity, ionic bond formation and covalent bond formation.
- PHET Simulation: Atomic Interactions - This simulation allows students to explore interactions between different combinations of two atoms.
- Consolidation: To consolidate the lesson, have students build molecular models using the molecular model kits. The following is a worksheet that could be provided to students: Molecular Models Activity
