Lesson 8: Collecting Gas Over Water Experiment

In this laboratory experiment, students will explore one of the many applications of one of the gas laws, Dalton's law of partial pressures. Students will be reacting magnesium metal with zinc chloride to collect hydrogen gas. They will then be able to find the dry pressure of the gas by factoring out the pressure of the water vapour within the gas collecting tube.

Materials:

  • magnesium metal
  • zinc chloride solution
  • 3 L beaker
  • gas collecting tube
  • rubber tube
  • pressure monitoring device
  • goggles
  • gloves

Safety Precautions:

  • wear gloves and goggles at all times
  • take care when handling acid, since it is corrosive
  • do not ingest the materials
