Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert Du Montier De Lafayette was his name but people just called him Marquis De Lafayette. If I were one of those people I would call him like that too because his real name is too long and too complicated. Lafayette had this idea that he wanted to go to America. He knew that the King and his family will not approve this idea. So he told his friend Comte de Broglie, and obviously his friend got into the pan as well. He didn't want to be against the Americans, he wanted to be part of them. When he got to America, the congress welcomed him.
Lafayette was going to work in the American army but as a volunteer, without any pay. He was so patriotic with the Americans, that later on the Congress named him Major General. Lafayette was part of Washington's army. Lafayette was very loyal to Washington because one time there were some people that didn't like Washington, so they just wanted to take Washington form his position. So those people asked if Lafayette would be into that and he said NO.
This is Lafayette. From this picture, I see that Lafayette is a good person. I can see that by looking at his face. I don't see that Lafayette has any medals. But, I know that he was a leader to other(not as Washington, but close). He was really excited about being in the army and he did everything he could. It is so incredible that even though he didn't get payed he worked in the army as a volunteer. He was risking his life for the colonists, for America, not because he wanted to get payed!
This letter that you see here, is the letter that Washington sent back to Lafayette. Lafayette had wrote Washington a letter saying that he was loyalist to the Americans. Also, he told Washington what was happening and how did people want Lafayette to be against Washington. So, Washington sent this letter back. This letter said all the appreciation that Washington had because of what Lafayette lived.
This video shows you how today we remember about Lafayette. There are places, parks, etc. that have his name. The last thing that they asked in the video is why did they put Lafayette's name in all of this things. My answer is that because of all the tings Lafayette did. Because he had the temptation to betray Washington, but he didn't, He was layal, and he had a srtong feeling about patriotism too. He work only to save America!
