Friedrich Von Steuben, was a Prussian military officer. He became a Prussian soldier when he was 17. Steuben participated in the winter encampment of Valley Forge. He was an inspector general under George Washington. His job was to train the Continental Army. He trained the army even in winter, when they were fighting in Valley Forge. That is why the army learned so many tactics and discipline of a true army.
Even though he didn't know how to speak English, he wrote the Revolutionary War drill manual. This manual became the standard drill manual used by the US military until the war of 1812. Alexander Hamilton and Nathanael Greene translate this into English. As I said before, Steuben was Prussian, so all the tactics that he teached were Prussian. All those Prussian tactics were more advanced that the European ones. He forced the Americans to learn the tactics so that they could get used to them. That is why, later on, Washington commanded that Steuben should be named inspector general of the Continental Army.
This man that is in this picture is Friedrich Von Steuben. This is how he looks, he is dress as an officer(kind of). As you may see carefully, he has somethings in his clothes. He has a blue medal and a red medal. Over to the your right, you will see that he has a bigger medal. It's a big star, and inside it has some of red. I tried to investigate what each medal meant but I didn't find out. Maybe if you find something about the medals, what do they mean, and why did he got them, you are welcome to live a comment. Anyway, I think those medals were really significant and he really deserved them.
In this picture, you will see the manual that Steuben wrote. This picture is a Facsimile Reprint of the 1794 edition. It's not the exactly one that he wrote but it is a copy of it. I'm pretty sure, today many of the army around the world uses some of his tactics. This picture is important because this helped the Americans "win". Let me explain, not like win in the moment because Valley Forge wasn't a battle, but win in the future. Also, to win some experiences that some of those men couldn't have because of the type of men they were. (blacksmith, carpenter..) I imagine those men, specially George Washington were pretty excited.
In this video, you will see how Steuben teached the army. You will see how he implemented the hygiene of the weapons that they used. How he teaches the soldiers how to grab the gun. How he supervises every single detail. How he give them tips and put up some practice so that they could imagine that they were fighting. If I were one of those men, I would be pretty excited.
