The Battle of Long Island was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War. Also, it was the major battle that happened after the Declaration of Independence. The battle was on April 27,1776 and it took place in the southern part of Long Island, that today it is Brooklyn. George Washington was the American's leader. The British attacked first in the morning. The British used a smart tactic here. The British first, sent a small group to fight. So, while the Americans were concentrated to fight the small group, the other part of the British group came from the East.
Washington didn't want to surrender! (me neither if I was there) So, he sent his army to Brooklyn Heights. The British didn't want to risk the men in their army, so they just waited for the next day. So, on the night of August 29, Washington told all of his army to silently and slowly(because the weather was foggy and it was raining so it was hard to see) make their way across the East River to Manhattan When the British went to look for the Americans.. they were gone. Washington and his army went back to Pennsylvania, so the British won and remained in control of New York City for the rest of the Revolutionary War.
In this picture, you see different things. In one side, there is a river and a house. There are a lot of men on the floor because this was the largest battle in the revolutionary war, so that means there were a lot of men. Some people are trying to escape through the river and others are just fighting. In the picture, you see more blue men than the other. So, what George Washington did was to tell all of his men to go to Brooklyn Heights because he wanted to protect them. If Washington didn't choose to do that, probably all his men were going to die.
In the second picture, you see the Americans escaping. They are going to cross the East River to Manhattan. They are escaping because there were more British and Washington almost looses part of his army. They escaped at night and secretly because they didn't want the British to found out that they left. That is how they "tricked" the British. Washington was really smart by doing this because this is better than having your army dead, in my opinion. I know that one day, he is going to take New York from the British.
