Mary: College of Cub Scouting is coming up in 9 days. Lots of good classes. Including: camping, first aid, CPR (red cross), knots and ropes, skits and songs, den leader specific, cubmaster specific, outdoor ethics, dutch oven cooking (will also be desert at event), advancement and beyond, leader recognition, grand old flag, STEM, succession planning, record keeping including Scoutbook. Please register. We'll have a list that day of what you signed up for along with rooms and times. Numbers are very low. So please tell others about it. Currently $20, but will be $25 on day of registration.
-Involve parents. Bring them forward in seating and design activities around them. Having a general parent meeting early in the year is also a good idea.
-Have a facebook page or website. Communicate expectations of parental participation on those sites.
-Try to slowly increase responsibilities on Cub Scouts at each grade level so that they can run their own meetings (perhaps by Webelos). That will prepare them for Boy Scouts in which they are running their own patrol meetings. For example, have Webelos Den decide which electives they want to work on. Gives them ownership of rank advancement. Utilize Denned Cords.
-Rotate leaders each month so that they each have the experience.
-Model good behavior as an adult leader and good dress. Idea: have mock uniform inspection with den chiefs. Set the example by getting trained and awarded yourself (i.e. adult square knots < http://usscouts.org/awards/knots1.asp>). Training knots include things like attending roundtables or other training.
-Cub Scout Leader's Training Award < http://usscouts.org/awards/scoutertrainingC.asp>
-Have scouts bring a plastic bag with scout book and supplies like pen and ropes. Learned Simple Simon under < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Simon_under>. Full knot information on this site at Knots, Knots, and Nots.
-Idea for filler: Can have pre-printed signs with fun "waves" on it. Highly interactive for scouts.
-Register for Cub Scout Night at the Museum (Sat, Nov 11). Event is in calendar and on facebook.
-Shared examples of den doodles as an immediate reward for whatever you want to reward. Can be advancement. Can be behavior expectations during the meeting. Can use within pack awards to reward den participation, uniform and behavior. Pack 97 awards the "Cubie" (cartoon Cub Scout that holds candy) award at the end of each Pack meeting (includes candy). Helps create peer pressure to wear uniform, be good, etc. Can find directions in many Cub Scout leader books.
-Books available: Den Leader guides. Leader How To Book. More, available at OEC or can download.
-Commissioner's minute. In 1995 reintroduced wolves into Yellowstone. Changed elk, changed aspens, changed beavers, changed rivers. The whole system changed from a small change. That is what we do in Scouting.
