See the following lists for suggestions. These are not exhaustive lists, but anything found on these lists is acceptable.

When reading your required books of "literary merit," and you're in doubt, don't risk it. Just confirm with Chilton first whether it's considered "literary merit" or not.

Read a collection (a minimum of 10 stories not one story) by any author listed above in the novel recommendations.

I would strongly recommend reading anything from your AP Literature textbook Perrine's Literature.
