Poems for Response:

Need ideas to be more creative? Tired of writing the same old poetry response? These are some ideas to help:

  • Answer the questions from the textbook in your response. This is why I chose these poems, because they had guiding questions and this will help you analyze the poems from an AP level. This isn't the purpose of this assignment, but if you need help responding to the poem, this is an excellent place to start. Just make sure that you create flow between the questions and write a narrative of the poem, not simply answering question 1 and then onto question 2, etc.

  • Write from a different perspective/role: be the author, be the page it was written on, be the pen, be from the time period, be from a different time period/context, be a famous poetry critic, be an alien that understands patterns but not our language, etc.

  • Write directly to the author or as the author. When you do this, focus on their technique and craft, not their meaning. For example, you would explain why you used a particular metaphor, not what the metaphor means exactly.

  • Write using a different genre than a journal or essay, using this Genre List: Click here

  • Write an imitative poem in same style as the poem, about the same content, or a parody of the poem. Make sure to leave some room at the end of the poem to explain your thinking and creative process in creating this new poem. Also, please write down which poem you're responding to in the title so it's clear to Mr. Chilton.
